The Herbivore Clothing Company

The Herbivore Clothing CompanyIf you’ve ever declared your love for tofu (I have on several occasions), there is a store for you. The Herbivore Clothing Company, tucked in the northernmost spot of a low-slung brick building off of NE Killingsworth and 30th Ave, is a cruelty-free addition to this revitalized intersection of local businesses and eateries.

No, Herbivore doesn’t sell the familiar white building blocks of a vegetarian’s diet per say, but it does cater to those who are mindful of what they put in their stomachs, on their body or even in their mind. Current inventory includes handbags fashioned of hemp and bike innertubes, leather-free belts, silk screened sweatshop-free clothing and a respectable selection of books on everything from vegan cupcakses to preparing beans. Look a little closer and you’ll also find artisianal cards, sustainably harvested wood picture frames and zine-like information for those new to the cause of eating and living without cruelty.

Cheerful co-owner, Michelle, also works on the epynonomous magazine, a professional tome on “Cruelty Free Culture and Vegetarian Lifestyles.” The publication’s well-designed pages are complete with insights, attractive advertising and memorable moments. For example, the quote that’s been ringing in my head since I devoured the Fall 2006 edition just this afternoon, is:

“Activism is getting off your ass and working to try to better something that really bothers you.”
- Jenny Brown, Woodstock Farm Annual Sanctuary
